Shakespeare’s Globe is a world-renowned performing arts venue, cultural attraction and education centre located on the bank of the River Thames in London. Kensington + Chelsea Festival are delighted to be hosting two performances by Shakespeare’s Globe on Tour on Saturday 14 August, with A Midsummer Night’s Dream at 2pm and the Audience Choice - where you get to choose on the night which show the Company present from As You Like It, The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at 7pm.
Shakespeare’s Globe are spending the summer to get to know local audiences in the Globe’s first ever neighbourhood tour. How did a company tour in Shakespeare’s day? A small group of actors, juggling a variety of roles in a number of plays, would leave London and head off to entertain audiences around the country. Ordinarily, that’s exactly what Shakespeare’s Globe Touring Ensemble would do too. But they are doing things a little differently this year… As ever, the talented and versatile company will take on multiple roles across three plays as they unravel these tales of lovers, exiles, dreamers and wanderers.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
An enchanted forest charms a disenchanted court. In Athens a daughter’s disobedience forces two lovers to flee to the woods, pursued by the two lovers they rejected. In the woods, amateur actors rehearse a play, while the king of fairies plays tricks and captivates the night. A mischievous Puck with the magical juice of a flower helps love lose its way while the fairy queen falls for an ass; the king and queen of the fairies reconcile; the lovers find each other, return to court and marriage celebrations end in a theatrical dream.
